3 reasons why Introverts make awesome sales people!!
There are almost as many introverts in technology sales as extroverts why?
The best sales people are great listeners, not talkers as opposed to popular belief. When you represent a BEST in class or industry leading product; you are really a consultant, not a sales person. Your job is to ask questions to see if there is a need for your “product or service.” You are there to help your prospect. If they see you have a great solution, to help them, it’s their decision, you are not selling- you are informing or consulting. Strengths introverts draw from which make them successful in sales:
- You are a thinker. Many introverts would rather grab “read” or ponder a problem versus go to party. While entertaining customers is a requirement for sales professionals, leveraging your research to deliver insights for a customer’s problem will differentiate you versus the competition. Mindfulness and alone time, which come natural to introverts, opens the opportunity for you to think about options to solve problems. Solving a problem is why a prospect will find conversation with you valuable.
- You are interested. You like to learn. Stephen Covey said it best, “Seek first to understand, then be understood”. Many introverts are researchers and seekers of information. This is THE core skill in sales. Now asking good questions and being interested, does not replace the need to do your homework.
Both are required
- You get Energy from being alone. Introverts build energy by when alone. Most sales roles are individual contributors which a variety of the work, finding and contacting prospects, planning for customer meetings, and development of proposals – business cases occur by yourself or working in a small group. Sales is about preparing (practicing) for customer engagement, just like in sports.
