4 reasons you should consider a sales career!!

During our Covid break, many people are reevaluating their careers while others are just starting out. Sales, as a career, is usually not discussed on career day in high school or college. Our first exposure to sales people is often with our parents going to make a significant investment (car, furniture, house…). Society has created a variety of stereotypes of salespeople, most notably the used car salesman.

Wolf of Wall Street, Glengarry GlenRoss, and other movies have not done much to improve the image of the sales, so why should you consider a career in sales?

  1. Running a business, but without all the other work. Once you learn the process of sales for your industry, it is like running your own business. You have a quota (revenue objective), customers and resources (assets), expense budget, and expected to produce a positive return for the company (profits). You do not have to worry about accounting, filing taxes, and other operational activities.
  1. Problem Solving. You get to solve a lot of different problems. Your team and company rely on your planning and execution for success. You are constantly solving new and different problems:
    • How do I get the right team together to help this customer?
    • What does this customer need to succeed in this project?
    • What partner might we need to deliver the total solution for the customer?
  1. Autonomy, once proven. Once you have proven your ability to achieve quota to management, you are generally given more independence than in other roles. Your compensation is based on success and your manager has many responsibilities including helping you. After you are trained and successful, your manager will look for areas to help and provide a warning for problems that lie ahead, assuming they are a good sales manager.
  1. Top earners. Sales is a financially lucrative career and earnings are only limited by your hard work. Often this is listed first, but there is a trade-off. If you are not self-motivated, willing to take ownership of your success, and curious enough to solve many different problems, then a career in sales may not be the best fit.

Sales is a great career and one that creates many of the worlds top CEOs, Enterpeuners, and Leaders. In business it is often said, “Revenue solves all problems” are you ready to be a problem solver?
